A Fairfax Task Force has officially recommended renaming Lee Hwy, and the list has been narrowed down to 5 names. The FC29 Committee supports renaming but strongly believes that a name with "Blvd." in it is much more aligned with our pedestrian friendly efforts than a name with "Hwy" in it. Highways are not meant to be pedestrian friendly. Instead, they imply speeding cars. If you agree, *please* write the committee and express your concerns. Below you will find a sample email you can use. The email address is: [email protected] . Please let your voices be heard. You can make a difference for our portion of Route 29!
Dear members of the Task Force,
I am a resident living near Lee Hwy, and I want to voice my opinion regarding the proposed name changes. Hopefully you are aware of the efforts by the community-led Falls Church 29 Initiative, which has worked to increase the walkability and improve access along Route 29 in the Falls Church area. This group has worked with Fairfax, Falls Church and VDOT officials and several grants have already been awarded to help make this area more pedestrian friendly for the nearby communities. We envision this stretch of road will one day no longer divide communities between Falls Church and Fairfax with its unsafe sidewalks and lack of crosswalks, but will instead bring them together, offering a way to easily cross the street and easily walk to businesses and other residential communities.
With the opportunity to change the name of the street, I strongly encourage the members of your task force to choose a name ending in "Boulevard" rather than "Highway," to support the community efforts of the Falls Church 29 Initiative. Simply put, highways do not connote a walkable space, whereas Boulevards can. Please do not hamper the community efforts already in place to create a more walkable, pedestrian-friendly stretch of space along the Route 29 corridor in Falls Church. We hope instead you will support our efforts and ensure that the name changes to "Blvd" rather than stays as a "Hwy."
Thank you,
